Fixture Man's Favourites
An insider view for our newer members-
As well as upcoming race events detailed elsewhere in this edition your Relay Magazine, there are a number of ‘not to be missed’ events slightly later in the year which should be in your diaries to ensure you don’t accidentally book a longed for exotic holiday or perhaps ultimate spa weekend when you really should be out there engaged in another ‘ultimate’ running experience!
A note of warning - Some of these events have very early closing dates due to popularity (and not just from RRR members) so if you are intending to give one a go then speak with others in the Club to get the low down on how good (or bad!) the experience might be. Entry forms are available on line or via the Club folder.
2nd September – The Beast. 14ish miles of trail running starting from Corfe Castle, on a circular route through lanes and tracks towards the stunning Dorset Coast with it’s perfect view towards France (or no visibility at all depending on the weather), up and down the cliff top paths including the infamous 200+ steps of Houns Tout before turning inland and back to Corfe – what a wonderful sight that old ruined castle is as it appears in the distance after a couple of hours running!
8th September – The Test Way Relay. The 22nd holding of this popular Team Relay event with teams of runners covering the 44 miles from Inkpen Beacon in the north, down the Test Way to Eling Mill on Southampton Water. With around 28 teams of male, female and mixed groups each with 9 members, all standards of runners are welcomed to join the fun and ‘do their bit’. The event is highly sociable, very scenic and for those who wish to support their fellow runners, changeover points are easily accessible to pass on encouragement and deal with the logistics of transporting the fresh and the weary to their respective drop off points.
16th September – The New Forest ½ Marathon.
Bike Ride. Cross training is the way to ever
better fitness levels so a chance to join in with fellow runners and pedal
pushers alike. Not only will your legs ache in the evening but you will have
to choose the soft chair as well. A choice of 18, 28 or 48 miles through parts
of the New Forest should cater for all levels of enthusiasm. Romsey Road Runners
should be well represented judging by all closet cyclists that appear at Mountbatten
track on a Thursday evening.
