Dear Sports Editor
'The Clarendon Marathon and Half Marathon took place last Sunday along the Clarendon Way: the Marathon from Salisbury to Winchester and the Half Marathon from Broughton to Winchester. No less than 19 Romsey Road Runners helped brighten an otherwise grey day with their yellow and blue vests dotted along the route. The Half Marathon ladies team comprising Jane Field (1:50:45), Penny Jennings (1:51:27) and Tamatha Ryan (1:55:28) did particularly well, finishing 2nd out of 25 teams, behind Winchester & District Athletics Club - an excellent result given the size of some of the running clubs entering the event. Penny also came 2nd in the W40 age category and Julia Abab also ran very well in 2:05:59 to come 3rd in her age group.
This undulating cross country course wasn't without incident and many found tree roots to be their downfall! Wendy Couper, despite a minor fall, finished in 2:26:10 and came 2nd in her age group. Carol Brunner had a more serious tumble two miles before the end but managed to complete the race in 2:22:41 before a visit to A&E in Winchester for treatment to a cut on her chin. Neil Payne felt distinctly unwell just before the end but managed to stay upright, completing the course in 2:28:20.
Other Half Marathon results: Men; Paul Bradley 1:56:52, Alistair Longworth 2:01:28, Steve Davies 2:02:39, Derek Kelly 2:11:55. Ladies; Heidi Williams 2:10:32, Andrea Markham 2:11:20, Charlotte Maslen 2:18:21, Anna Duignan 2:30:15, Sarah Thorn 2:31:38, Gill Callus 2:45:42, Emily Abab 2:50:18.
Tony Peelo took part in the Marathon and finished in a very commendable time of 4:17:17. This was Tony's second marathon this year and he is now looking forward to competing in the Dublin Marathon in just under a month's time.
