Romsey Advertiser's Articles

Dear Sports Editor

Please find below news from Romsey Road Runners for inclusion in the Road Running section of this week's Romsey Advertiser. I will, again, leave you to decide on a suitable heading.

'A gloriously sunny Sunday morning greeted participants in this year's unique 5 mile Braishfield Beer Race organised by Romsey Road Runners. The club were delighted that, despite the heat, 170 runners completed the race, 25 up on last year and some excellent times were recorded too. Steve Rhys-Jones, Basingstoke and Mid Hants was first home in 26:24, 2nd Mick Hargreaves, Bournemouth 26:41 and 3rd Michael Grist, Poole Runners 27:28. The first lady home was Susan Sleath, Hardley Runners in 33:35, 2nd Jackie Lloyd, Unattached 34:43 and 3rd Amy Linford, Unattached in 35:13. Runners enjoyed a well-earned rest on the village hall green with their free pint of beer, or soft drink afterwards, and a good time was had by participants, supporters and helpers alike.

In the fifth race of the RR10 Cross Country Series held at Itchen Valley Country Park at West End, Romsey Road Runners were out in force yet again as the equivalent of two football teams (11 men and 11 ladies) battled against other local clubs in the undulating, sometimes rutted, two and a half lap course over fields and through woods. The ladies 'A' team earned 6th place with all three members finishing in the top 20; Jane Field 14, Penny Jennings 16 and Tamantha Ryan 20. For Penny and Tamantha, this was their best ever position. Chris Brown also gained his best result coming in 48th, over 20 places higher than his previous race. Other Results: Men; David Barrett 20, Jim Wright 53, Alistair Longworth 95, David Page 124, Paul Bradley 128, Andrew Archibald 138, Steve Davies 144, David Nixon 178, Keith Stone 183, Derek Kelly 188. Ladies: Julia Abab 35, Andrea Markham 56, Liz Slade 57, Mary Adams 64, Sarah Thorn 75, Ruth Page 85, Wendy Couper 86, Gill Callus 102.'

Many thanks.
