'While most members of Romsey Road Runners were taking it a little easier over the festive period, winners of the two London Marathon club places, Gill Callus and Tamatha Ryan, were competing in races to help kick start their training programmes.

The Somerley 10K was held between Christmas and New Year on the Somerley Estate, Dorset in aid of the Wessex Autistic Society. Tamatha finished in 47:48 and Gill in 64:56. Jane Field was the first Romsey runner home in 46:03; Andrew Archibald finished in just over 47 minutes and Charlotte Maslen, who was recovering from a chest infection, completed the race in just over 58 minutes.

Tam's second race was the gruelling 13+ mile Longmoor Lollop held last Sunday at Bordon, where she was 5th lady home in an excellent 1 hour 58 minutes. Officially described as 'hard and hilly' the race took participants round three undulating laps of mixed terrain including mud and sand.

On the social side, Julia Abab and Gill Callus organised a New Year's Day social walk, run or cycle over a lovely route in the New Forest followed by refreshments in a local pub in Ashurst. Then last Saturday, Raymond Masters led one of his ever popular 'Ray's Walks' starting and ending at Worth Matravers in Dorset. Ray has worked out many picturesque Dorset walks and they all involve at least 10 undulating miles with a lovely long break for lunch! Both events were enjoyed by all.
