'Romsey Road Runners' Ladies Team romped to
victory in the Marwell 10K last Sunday. Lynne Whitaker (42:04 and fourth lady
finisher), Jane Field (45:57) and Penny Jennings (48:20) beat the much larger
clubs of Southampton and Stubbington Green into joint 2nd place. This undulating
race is particularly tough and entrants free admission to the zoo, for taking
part, is well deserved. Other Results: Paul Cutbill 48:49, Christine Saunders
51:37, Sarah Thorn 53:15, Michelle Shaw 57:13, Anna Johnson 57:13, Kate Clements
69:38.
On the same day, the village of Houghton hosted their annual Trail and Fun
Run for runners, walkers and cyclists, starting and finishing at the village
hall. Thirteen Romsey Road Runners enjoyed the well organised 11K off-road
event which isn't about fast finishing times and high positions but definitely
the taking part. Maps were given out at the start but it didn't stop some
taking a wrong turn and running round a field instead of across it! It was
good to have the encouragement of fellow member Tony Peelo who was marshalling
this year rather than taking part, due to injury. With two drinks stations
en route and spot prizes, sweets, oranges, cakes and hot drinks at the finish,
participants were made to feel very welcome.
The RR10 Summer Cross Country Series got under way last week at the Royal
Victoria Country Park, Netley with a tremendous turnout by members of Romsey
Road Runners. Thirty three members took part in the two lap race in perfect
race conditions. Matt Hammerton was the star on this occasion as, not only
had he cycled to the race, but still managed to finish 7th overall. Many members
achieved their highest percentage positions and all agreed, it was a great
way to start the season. Other Results: Men; Chris Brown 57, Jim Wright 60,
