Romsey Advertiser's Articles
The annual Braishfield Beer Race was highlighted
in a recent Runners World website article on the nutritional benefits of beer.
“There's nothing like a cool pint after a hot run - and it might even
do you good” claimed their headline. Many of the 180 entrants in Sunday’s
race took the advice to heart.
The Beer Race showcases some of the best aspects
of Hampshire. A 5 mile dash around the idyllic village of Braishfield is followed
by free beer or soft drinks on the green, courtesy of Hampshire Brewery and
Hildon water. First home was Andy Morgan-Lee of Southampton Running club,
setting a new course record of 25:42, followed 15 seconds later by James Baker
of Chichester. Previous winners Matt West and Mark Hargreaves were 3rd and
4th respectively, Mark taking the first veteran prize. First lady was Karen
Rushton, also of the Southampton club, in 30:33.
Last year’s winner Steve Rees Jones of
Braishfield was unable to compete, but the honour of the village was upheld
by Janet Eager, who won her category for a second time. Local entrants also
included Braishfield residents Jerry and Elspeth Dugdale, and several representatives
of the ‘infamous’ Halterworth Harriers.
