After the latest session at Club of this event, all up-to-date times can be found here. The 5km Challenge is to be held on Monday the 8th of September, so see if your track training during the summer has paid off!
The placings for the lasr RR10 at Lordshill as well as other results have been collated by Liz and can be seen here.
New safety guidelines have now been published and can be viewed over at the "Training" page. Basically it covers members not using personal stereos during Club training sessions.
At last years AGM it was proposed that the club constitution for Romsey Road Runners needed to be reviewed and the committee has been working on this over the last few months. The committee has now agreed an updated version which is based on a template provided by UK Athletics and better reflects the current needs of the club. The revised draft constitution must now be formally approved by the membership at the AGM which is to be held on 11th November. Please would members review the attached RRR Constitution and pass any comments to a committee member prior to the AGM so that these may be considered by the committee pending a formal vote at the AGM. Whilst an opportunity for discussion will be made available at the AGM, any matters considered to be of fundamental concern should be raised before this date so that the committee may have sufficient time to give due consideration. The new Constitution can be found here, as well as there being a link under the "AGM" section.
Just head on over to the "Training" page for the newly published training schedule covering September, October, and November. Make sure that you plan ahead and never miss that Cemetery Hill session you love!
It was a humid evening that greeted the runners from Romsey taking part in the penultimate race of this years RR10 series, held at the Lordswood Fire breaks. Wasn't really sure of the accuracy of the "2 minute walk to the start" description after parking my car in the school, but it soon became apparent that that course was going to be anything but flat as the start and finished was situated at what seemed to be the highest point in the whole area. The course was pegged at 4.8 miles but with the tree canopies every where the old trusty Garmin was not to be relied on for working out a strategy. The course consisted of woodland tracks and gravel paths, with several points being quite moist and a two lap circuit. I personally found it quite enjoyable with the course being challenging due to the hills thrown in. Well done to all those who came, and don't forget the final race is on the 20th of August, at 7.15 pm at IBM in Hursley. The RR10 page has now been updated with the results.
The pentathlon tables have again been updated by Nick Berryman showing the latest positions and times. Make sure you head over and take a look and make sure your latest PB for this years races is listed!!.
Nick Berryman has updated the race diary found on the Races page to cover races from August through to October. So just head over to the "Races" page and plan ahead. One to look out for is The Test Way Relay. This is a great event comprising of teams from all the local running clubs running the Test Way, ending back in Totton. Nick is looking for volunteers to take on a leg so let him know! Another huge favorite that regularly gets to maximum capacity is the New Forest Half Marathon on the 31st August, and of course if you are feeling a little braver the full marathon event! - make sure you apply early to avoid disappointment. And finally, a Club favourite, the Clarendon half and full marathon on the 5th of October. This is a great off road race with beautiful scenery.
A round up of last weeks runs etc can be found here.
Minutes from the Committee meeting held on the 21st July are now published. Click the AGM button above then choose the link.
This last weeks of results that have been posted to the Romsey Advertiser compiled by Liz Slade can be found here.
It was a blustery and wet evening that faced the Romsey Road Runners who arrived at the Manor Farm Country Park for race 7 hosted by Stubbington Runners. With a variety of fashions, including plastic bags and umbrella's as people warmed up, (bad luck Greg you couldn't take it on the race), people lined up for the start. This race was one of the shorter ones posted at 4.2 miles and started with a lap around the park around to thin out the field a bit for the narrow bottle neck into the wooded track, avoiding the two foot deep pot hole on the corner. The twisty course comprised a mixture of lanes, tracks with suitable puddles of mud thrown in, but although wet it was still quite warm. With a final lap around the park again and a slight downhill allowing for fast sprints to the end to pick off those you want, our intrepid runner finished, many with good placing's. All results have now been entered onto the RR10 page for your perusal.
Liz has again rounded up this weeks results of the recent RR10, Lordshill 10km and other races. Just click here.
The pentathlon tables have now been fully updated with placings and times for the races everyone has completed. Pop over to the "RR10/Pen" page and make sure your latest times are up. If they are not then just e-mail Nick.
All placings in the RR10 races have now been entered up to Race 6 recently held at Blackfield. To see them just head over to the "RR10/PEN" page.
Ian Berry of Winchester & District AC has been out with his camera at two recent RR10 meetings and has managed to take some fantastic pictures, and has kindly allowed his web site to be linked here. Moving away from the standard race photographer in a high-vis vest atop a ladder so allowing the runners to compose themselves, he has been able to capture the true spirit of that finish line sprint. I especially like the one of Matt at the start line of the Deer Leap Enclosure RR10,deep in focus while all around him....

Head over to the "Social" page to find out more details of the forthcoming Summer Social BBQ and rounder's match!!
Results from the RR10 held at the Itchen Valley Country Park can be found here.
Congratulations to Romsey Ladies who
gained promotion this year from A-Division 3 to A-Division 2. The league is having a bit of a transformation for next season, having increased from 10 to 12 races! Starting with Overton 5 on Sat 6th September - entry forms available now! For each race, a men's team comprises
4 runners, a ladies team 3 runners - no change. Individual competition: More info, including fixture list, league rules, etc. can be found at www.hrrl.org.uk Part of the rationale of increasing the league to 12 races is the increased risk of cancellation of races, for example the popular Totton 10km will no longer be run, and Bramley20 was cancelled last year. Following the revised Road Safety Policy from the Association of Chief Police Officers which places the emphasis on race organisers to apply for road closures to their Local Authority which can then be policed by private companies with stop/go signs (as used at the recent Winchester 10km), rather than the police, it is envisaged that sadly more races will be cancelled. Understandably there is a great deal
of anger at this amongst running clubs and organisations and this
issue is being raised through SEAA and England Athletics, but as the
directive essentially comes from the Home Office then no change in
policy is envisaged anytime soon.
Just click on the "B'FIELD 5M" button on the left to get the full round up of all results. A full write up by roving reporter Liz can be found here. Photographs were kindly taken by Derek Warn, and can be viewed by clicking his site here.

The Mile of Miles Relay is fast approaching and Romsey Road Runners Club needs you!! This is a great event where you just have to run round a track for a mile and then hand over to the next person, and is a fantastic way if your so inclined, on how fast you can actually do that single mile. It's on Wednesday the 18th of June at 7.00pm, and is at the Southampton Track and Field location off Wide Lane which is just opposite Southampton Parkway railway station off junction 5 of the M27. Hope to see you there!
Nick Berryman has gone through all the results sheets etc and produced the latest positions for the Pentathlon. This can be seen by clicking on the "RR10/Pen" button on the left. It is currently a work in progress as I am yet to get individual times down for people's races - but hopefully should soon be fully up.
The latest results from the RR10 held courtesy of Team Southampton/Running Sisters have now been put up on the RR10 page. The weather was probably the worst seen at this seasons meetings but the big bonus was the lack of biting mossies as experienced last time we were at the Inclosure. Shoes were double tied in anticipation of having them sucked off in the mud, and with the recent rains a wet course was in the offing. At around 4.8 miles the course was shorter and seemed to stick more to the tracks than the forest floor. Well done to all all braved the winds and rain, and don't forget, next meet is on the 11th of June at the Itchen Valley Country Park hosted by Eastleigh Running Club.
This weeks results from the latest RR10, and other races can be found by clicking here. MARSHALL'S NEEDED!! This year’s Beer race is on Sunday 15th June, all members are asked to help run the event, whether marshalling the course or helping at the start of finish. If you can help, please let Nick know, either by writing your name on a sign-up sheet at club nights, or e-mailing here.

Another strong turnout from Romsey for the second of the RR10 series races, held at the Longdown Inclosure, Ashurst. It was definitely going to be a warm one, with high temperatures from the day lasting into the early evening, which caused the local wildlife, namely every known insect species to come out and feast upon the assembled runners. Paul CUTBILL seemed to be having particular problems with the mossies, however put it down to only the female's being the ones who bite! It was record turnout of runners overall beating even last meetings record, but luckily at the start the field could spread out, with a reasonable distance to sort out the general placing's before the course narrowed. With all the recent hot weather you would think the course would be nice and dry, which was furthest from the truth. I know I passed several runners in calf deep mud attempting to fish out their lost shoe. At 5.2 miles, (which with my Garmin proved to be pretty accurate at 5.18 miles) the course was longer than last time, with several hills and a depressing short loop around the trees instead of a straight line back to the finish. All results have now been put on the RR10 page. Again well done to all runners, and don't forget the next meeting is at Wilverly Enclosure, Sway, on the 21st of May at 7.30pm. Nick Berryman has updated the race diary found on the Races page to cover races from May through to July, so don't delay plan your races well in advance to avoid disappointment.
A massive well done to the ladies team in the Marwell 10km race clinching first place!!! Also to all who braved the thunder, lightening and rain, pictured above who ran the scenic Houghton 11km. Full round up of times can be found from Liz here. There is a new gallery of the pictures for the Houghton 11km found here.
Photographs from the recent Totton 10km road race kindly taken by Steve Davies, are now on the site and can be viewed by clicking the "Photos" button on the side and using the "RACES" drop down menu.
A huge well done to the 33 Romsey Road Runners who all came to this years first RR10 meet at the Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley Abbey. Although the sun was shining earlier in the day, by the time the race started the usual howling gale was blowing off the foreshore and the temperature had dropped. Looking around it was clear that there was a huge turnout by all clubs and so the event started in its usual causal fashion with a horn and people jostling for position. Two and a half times round the park area and then into wooded tracks interspersed with tarmac roads. Being the first race the summer sun had yet to dry out the moist parts of the woodland section causing it to be a tad soggy underfoot, coupled with the hazards of low brambles and hanging branches that had to be ducked under regularly. If you wished to gain any places, then the park sections was needed as the tracks were quite narrow. The second lap saw a small section of tarmac (quite uneven) road to the cemetery gates, then 180 degrees (and total loss of momentum) back on yourself. However it did give the opportunity to greet, cajole, wave, yell or scream at other Romsey runners you passed on the way, (and insult, make rude gestures to the other teams! j/k). We had 12 more runners enter this year, and appears looking at the placing's that we like to stick together with many club members coming in together or close by one another. The information board at the start said 4.66 miles, however after Garmin consultation we all agreed it was nearer to 5 miles - a warning perhaps for future events! The results have all been entered onto the "RR10/PEN" section of the site, and I have left up last years placing for anybody wishing to do a quick comparison on what they achieved in any particular race last time. Again an excellent turnout and don't forget the next meet is at Longdown Inclosure in Ashurst at 7.15 pm on the 7th of May - see you there!
This seasons first RR10 at the Royal Victoria Country Park is nearly here starting at 7pm on April the 23rd. These events are fantastic for getting that mid-week training run in as well as a chance to represent the Club. For more details just click on the "RR10/PEN" link. Romsey Road Runners have gone from strength to strength in these events, so lets make 2008 a year to remember!
A provisional date has been given for this event as Wednesday the 18th of June, so plan ahead as this is a great event to take part in and gives you the chance to strive to beat that 4 minute hurdle! Check out the training page for more information of what the event is about. Venue and start time to be published as soon as known.
A MASSIVE well done to the eight Romsey Road Runners who took part in this years Flora London Marathon. Well done to all those that took part in this, especially Penny Jennings who was first lady home. From the looks it the course may have been slightly muddy! Results for this and other races can be found here.
Hi all, it's your friendly web-master here....just flew in from Tenerife after two week break, and lots of info and up-dates should be posted on the site very soon just after all the mountain of washing has been done....stay tuned!
Just in case you missed it from the news letter, please take a moment to browse through the safety guidelines when out on training sessions which now can accessed by clicking the link in the "Training" section of the site.
Nick Berryman has updated the race diary found on the Races page to cover races from April through to June, so don't delay plan your races well in advance to avoid disappointment.
Many thanks to Nick Berryman for collating all the results from all the CC6 races for Romsey runners which can be found here. Here's looking forward to the forthcoming RR10 events starting on the 23rd of April at the Royal Victoria Country Park!
It is well documented of the benefits of cross training to improve not only your running, but also your general level of fitness, tone and stamina. Adding other activities such as swimming and cycling, will improve many areas of your physical well being. A great form of cross training is doing circuits i.e. various exercises that works all different parts of your body which you can do at your own pace and exertion. Many people find the cost and intimidation of doing circuits at a large gym puts them off, so take advantage of the circuits held at Romsey School held every Friday evening starting at 6.45pm until 8.00pm. There is a cost of £3.00 and participated by members of your own running club in a friendly and personal atmosphere! If you have any questions, just ask at club nights.
Well done to Paul Cross, Penny Jennings, Irisha Cross, Stephen Edwards, Anna Duignan, Wendy Couper, and Gillian Callus who all did the picturesque Exbury 10km race this Sunday just gone. For all pictures just click the "Photos" link and use the "Races" drop down box.
For all those that braved the (semi) storm conditions this Monday, you would have been test subjects for the new Halterworth Lane and Industrial Estate route that was tried out. This will now be part of the regular training program and the route can be seen on Google Earth by going to the training page.
For all those who don't have Garmin running devices and often wonder how far they just ran in that long and slow weekend jaunt that there is a quick and easy way to work it out using Google Earth, by following these simple steps. 1) Open Google Earth and enter your postcode in the "Fly to" box in the left hand upper corner (assuming of course you started from home), and press enter. 2)Click on the symbol that looks like a ruler situated at the top of the page above the map screen. 3) A ruler box should appear, click on the "path" option changing it from "line". You also have the option from the drop down menu to change from miles to kilometers if you wish, (or smoots!). 4) Your cursor should then change from a hand to a target box. 5) Now just left click point to point tracing the route you have just done. Google Earth will then continually add up the distance. If you make a mistake just right click and it will remove the last point. 6) You can still scroll in and out using the mouse wheel and also navigate around the map by pressing the directional arrow keys situated just left of your number keypad on your keyboard.
Below is a picture of Lynne Whitaker and Christopher Brown who were the top two runners to finish at Hamble on Sunday.
Still confused on a Club night wondering where you will be running? Fear not as more Google Earth maps have been created for your perusal, just click the "Training " button on the left and scroll down to below the current schedule.
Men lose weight faster than women ? Results from a 16 month study looking
at exercising for weight loss, with men and women completing an identical
amount of exercise, show that men on average lost 11.5 lb (5.2Kg)
while women lost nothing. According to a university report, the theory
is that it may be due to an evolutionary effect. Nature seems protective
of women's role as child bearer and wants women to maintain adequate
body fat for nourishing healthy babies. Hence, women are much more
energy efficient. There is a belief that exercise is
futile as a form of weight control because it increases hunger and
you simply eat more. According to Aberdeen University this is a myth.
When you’ve set your targets, can you control whether you achieve them? One of your aims may be to beat Fred in all this year’s RR10 cross country races. This may meet all the SMART criteria, but whether you do or not is not solely down to your efforts. Fred may have the target of beating you, so will be working just as hard. How Fred runs is not something you can control, unless you spike his pre-race drink! He may be recovering from injury or a cold, or may be having an off-day, as might you. You also can’t control the weather – you may prefer to run with the sun on your back, Fred may enjoy running in the wind and rain (a Hardley specialty!) So what can you control? Most important is the quantity and quality of your training. However, there are other things you can do. One is to prepare thoroughly for a race. Have you got a kit check list, which includes the obvious – top, shorts, socks, shoes – and the less obvious – drink for before and after, towel , race number and pins, spare shoelaces and a minor first aid kit. Pack your bag the night before, then you won’t have a last minute rush. Read the details carefully, and especially the travel directions. Allow plenty of time for the journey – the first RR10 at Royal Victoria Country Park is always slow to get to. At the race check out the start and finish, and the course map if there is one. Even it you’Ave run it before, the route may have changes. The RR10 at Wolverine is hardly ever the same as the previous year. - So keep in control!!
After Ray stood down at the AGM in
November nobody has been appointed as chair person. Main Duties of the role · In addition to the duties
and responsibilities that all committee members have when joining
a committee, the role of a chair has other specific requirements.
These requirements are focused around the need to ensure that the
committee acts as a team and that the business of the meetings is
conducted effectively. If you are interested please talk to any committee member.

As anticipated earlier, this race has now reached its limit and is not accepting anymore entrants. Bad luck to all those who missed the deadline and barring any injury woes, good luck to; David Barrett, Nick Berryman, Kate Clements, Irisha Cross, Paul Cross, Stephen Edwards, Paul Goodman, Derek Kelly, Alistair Longworth, Bruce Maddick, Andrea Markham, Sally Rouse, Christine Saunders, Nick Saunders, Chris Selfe, Liz Slade, Paul Slaughter, Sarah Thorn, Lynne Whitaker, and Heidi Williams!
It is well known that stretching before any physical exercise and especially afterwards has many benefits. Ever done some rigorous exercise and the next day woken up sore and stiff? Think back and ask yourself if you properly stretched off afterwards, chances are you didn't. Formulate a stretching routine and stick to it and do it regularly. For more information just click on the links below for some articles about stretching from Runner's World...
Raymond Master has very kindly acted as temporary Chairman of the club pending a new one being found (hint hint!!). His report for the year can be found by clicking on the "Chairman" button above.
With the CC6 season coming to an end that can only mean one thing - RR10's are soon to be a reality. For those with no experience of RR10's, these races are hosted by local clubs on Wednesday evenings and are run on tracks, woodland etc, so a little less mud than the CC6 series although it has been known to be slightly moist underfoot at times. The distance usually is around the 5 mile mark and to enter all you need to be is a fully paid member of RRR's and to wear a club vest on the night. When you finish you are given your position which is then collated and all clubs are placed in the league. These mid-week runs come HIGHLY recommended, due to them being shortish distance, with all abilities taking part and a great chance to represent your Club. If you have never taken part then it is well worth a go! For a summary of the dates just click on the "RR10/PENT" button on the left. The official RR10 League web site can also be found here. Don't forget also that we shall be hosting our event on the 23rd of July at Janesmoor Pond, Stoney Cross, so keep this date free if you are able to, as marshals are always in demand.
Last years AGM's minutes are now published on the site, as well as January's Committee meeting minutes for all those that wish to peruse. Please don't forget that the Clubs Committee works extremely hard behind the scenes so everybody enjoys the benefits! Just click on the "AGM" button above and then the specific link.
If not why not!! For all you runners out there who own a Garmin GPS running device, did you know that not only can you download all your runs to your computer showing a wealth of information, you can also directly display it on Google Earth. Google Earth is a small free download that you install onto your computer which allows you to view any site upon the globe by either entering the place name or postcode. Alot of areas are in fact now made up of ariel photographs, so pop in your post code and see your house! The download can be obtained from here, and is quite easy to follow. One thing I am hoping to do is create all our running routes and put them on the site as a link so you can just click it and it loads up in Google Earth. By way of experimentation, our recent Woodley/Fishlakes efforts done on the 18th can be seen by clicking here. Give it a go and then from the menus at the top just choose "Tools" and then "Play Tour". In the future I am hoping to do a short easy to follow guide for using Garmin devices and computers for those who are not that technically minded, (thats if anyone would benefit from it? - let me know) Alistair Longworth recently did the Winter Tough Guy Race near to Wolverhampton on the 27th of January. A write up of a few highlights up can be found here. The official site can be found here, and there are numerous clips on You Tube etc, with Alistair pictured here.
This Sunday see's two races to note on the 24th. For those wanting some road action the Winchester 10km race, although I have never done it I have heard it is a tad undulating. A very popular race with a lot of RRR's is The Terminator hosted by Pewsey Running Club. This is around 11 miles and rated as a mud fest with some nice hills thrown in and other delights with names to tempt like The Gully, The Coomb, and Terminator Hill. The T-shirt I've heard is rather good too! Don't forget the final CC6 is going to be held on the 2nd of March at 10:30 hours at the Manor Farm Country Park - it would be great to see a final big turnout from Romsey. All details of the above can be found using the links to the left. And where were you to see the New Year in.....???? - Many thanks to Steve Davies for the picture of those brave souls who braved the mud to see the New Year in, taken outside the New Forest Hotel.
New Spring Training Schedule now up, just hit the "Training" button on the left.
A big well done to all those who got nice and muddy doing the Stockbridge Fun Run!
All details can be found by clicking on the Social button to the left.
As at the 17th of January there have now been 1300 entries to the Eastleigh 10km race and it is well in line to hit the race limit soon! If you are considering entering this race you need to do it now especially if entering under the HRRL. Entry forms can be downloaded from the HRRL site, or online entry at runners world via the links page.
On a misty and murky day in December last year, a few Romsey Road Runners braved the cold and took part in the Somerley 10km race near Ringwood. All pictures can be found from the Race drop-down menu using the photos button. A word from our session leaders Jane Field and Paul Bradley........ Summer is with us now and Romsey Road Runners are back to their usual routine of Monday evenings Braishfield routes and Thursday evenings at Mountbatten track. At Braishfield all three routes and the first 5km time trial have now been run. The 5km time trial will be run monthly until September when runners compete against the handicapper for the shield. I feel that the job of handicapper has been getting harder every year and I anticipate a tough time this year. To date nobody has won the trophy more than once but this could be the year for a past winner, bribes not accepted! Track sessions are well under way with differing distances and types of sessions, some easier to explain and do than others. I have been very pleased with the numbers and the enthusiasm that these sessions have been greeted with, by older and newer members alike. As promised, sessions have been run individually, in pairs and in the occasional threesome. For any new members we meet at the grass track, which is in the middle of the field behind the school buildings, changing/toilets are in the corridor along from the sports hall, if you require directions please ask. I have recently completed risk assessments for our
sessions on the road, off road and track, and the road version is
published in this newsletter. Please can you read the risk assessments
and make yourself aware of them and the club safety guidelines –
issued previously. All of these documents (and maps of our routes)
are now available on our website and in the Session Leader folder
which is at most club nights. Sorry, I know all we want to do is to
enjoy ourselves, but health and safety is VERY important so please
read so you know what to do – and what not to do! Remember that the Beer Race is on 15th June and this
is our chance to watch other people enjoying their racing! Paul Cross Previous running experience is limited (just like we all were at one time or another). Paul has completed the Boscombe 5K and the Poole 5K earlier this year. He has already started running in the RR10 series. His goals are to get fit and keep fit. Plus "one day to beat my brother in a race". Watch this space. Irisha Cross Paul's wife. Also has limited previous running experience. Two years ago took part in the Race For Life. More recently has taken part in three races: Southampton 5K in February, Poole 5K in March, Totton 10K in April. Irisha is also a member of the David Lloyd Club. Sarah Thorn Says that she has always been into fitness, mainly at the gym and also rowing, (not a sport for wimps) which Sarah gave up a couple of seasons ago. Her goals are fitness and getting rid of the extra handles! Sarah has set herself a challenge to have her fittest year ever and hopes to get a place in the London Marathon in 2008. Kerry Williams "Resumed" running 4 years ago to run the Race For Life. Since then she has completed 4 half marathons and some 10Ks. Kerry's goals are to run the New Forest Marathon in Sept 2007 and to improve her pace for other distances. Anna Johnson Wants to keep fit and improve speed & distance. Familiar goals here. Earlier this year Anna took part in the Winchester 10k and Two Saints 10K . A big welcome to our newest recruits and I hope they achieve their goals. Raymond said that this year’s
Chairman’s Report would be a general overview of the club’s
progress as seen from his perspective and individual secretaries will
put flesh on the bone in their reports. The club was able to field full teams in the CC6 and RR10 series of races with ease, instead of scrambling around to raise a team as was the case a few years ago. Many runners are showing considerable improvement in their performances. Club evenings have been well attended and training sessions are popular and are going well. Membership is holding up well. Each year we lose a few members for a variety of good reasons, but there is a good influx of new members. Looking at the larger picture, the social side is lively. Both Julia and Gill have organised social gatherings, as well as the forthcoming dinner/dance. Home runs continue to be successful and are mainly well attended, although there was a low turn out for one. Walks on the Dorset Coast continue to be popular. Circuit Training continues to be good fun, if hard work too. At times numbers dip and we wonder if we will be able to carry on, then we get some weeks with good numbers and, overall, the sessions are just about paying for themselves. For the first time this year we played a football match against Halterworth Harriers, and this was successful, apart from the result. At a political level, i.e. the running
of athletics in the country, things are going through a period of
flux. The club inevitably has to take notice of the goings on to make
sure that the best interests of all the members are catered for. The
committee must continue to keep its eye on the ball here to see how
things evolve with respect to clubs like Romsey. I am handing over the chairmanship of the club at this meeting. I would like to thank all the members of the committee for their commitment in the past, and they have my best wishes for the future. Thanks are given to those committee members standing down at this time, especially Wendy for all her hard work over many, many years as secretary. Raymond closed his report by saying that he would like to wish all club members the best for the coming season. This year's AGM will take place on Tuesday 13th of November 2007 at Crosfield Hall, Romsey. |
