Upcoming Christmas and New Year Runs!!

You know its that time of year, when the consumption of all things good and fattening increase and you know that January is going to be just another month spent getting back to the pre-Christmas staus-quo.......but now there is the opportunity to be ahead of the game with these superb Club runs organised!!

Christmas Eve Run

It is a tradition for some of the RRR's to meet at Farly Church at 9:00 a.m. and run the 6-7 mile loop. Please come and join us. It's a wonderful way to get some fresh air and exercise before all the Christmas activities. There should be mince pies, Christmas cookies, etc with hot drinks at the finish so please bring a thermos of your favourite hot beverage.
The run will start from Farley Church which is at OS grid reference SU39722745. That should be sufficient information for all Boy Scouts and orienteers but for those who aren't, you can get there by going to Braishfield, turning right at the Wheatsheaf into Common Road, driving for 2 km to Lower Slackstead, then turning left (signposted Upper
Slackstead and Farley Church), driving another 1.8 km, going straight across at the crossroads and turning right after 500m.
Merry Christmas to you all.

New Years Day Run

Get rid of those cobwebs! Burn off some of those calories! Join the Romsey Road Runners' New Year's Day Run.

We'll start at the Bear and Ragged Staff at 10.30am. For parking, please use the gravel car park furthest from the pub on the Stockbridge side. The main route option is 5.9 miles but there are alternatives of 8.0 and 3.7 miles if anyone is prepared to lead them. The main route will head through Kimbridge, past the gravel pit, then back to the Mill Arms at Dunbridge with a pit stop for those who dehydrate quickly, back through Mottisfont to Lower Brook, up to Michelmersh and back down to the Bear and Ragged Staff. The shorter option cuts back to the main road from Mottisfont, while the longer option turns left at Dunbridge over to Lockerley and back via Cadbury Farm. An even longer option would be to come back via the Mottisfont estate path.

Following the run we will adjourn to the pub to compare strategies for fluid replacement and calorie intake.
Happy New Year to you all.

Ray's Winter Walk

Saturday 16th January 2010
Start 10.15am

Meet at the cliff top car park at Durdle Door (through the caravan park).
A charge is payable for the car park so you may prefer to park on the roadside and walk through the caravan park to join the walk.

We will join the coast path and travel westwards up and over Swyre Head and Bats Head before ascending the steep hill towards the stone needle monument where we stop for a short coffee break (or whatever your preferred beverage might be).
We soon turn inland and head for West Chaldon. From here we follow the minor road to Chaldon Herring. Here we will visit the Sailors Return for lunchtime refreshment (a wide range of food is available). In due course we will return to the coast path via Chideock Farm, descending into Scatchy Bottom and then ascending to the car park at Durdle Door.
For those who need to know such things the grid reference for the car park is: OL15 811804

A hilly walk of 10 miles.
EVERYONE WELCOME

In complete contrast to the previous year the sun shone out for the final RR10 event of 2009, held at IBM Hursley. Once the car had been parked our Club runners slowly meandered over to the start, and took up the dominant position above the other teams on the hill as they began their pre-race rituals. very soon the field began to fill with numerous runners, for the perfect conditions of being cool but sunny with no wind, in the picturesque grounds of Hursley House. Thirty two Romsey Road Runners arrived to compete in a three lap race, those that had raced here before knew that the hill up to the house would get longer and steeper every time, a deceptively hard course.

Being the last race there was a good turn out from all clubs with a total of over 350 runners, all trying to make the most of their last opportunity to climb those extra places up the table. With the pressure off having already won the series, Matt Hammerton was the first home for Romsey in 6th place. Cheering him on was wife Emma and their new addition to the family Eloise. Everyone ran well, although due to the exceptionally high standard many were placing lower than normal even though they were running faster. Not being out performed by the men were some more outstanding performances were Amanda Hull in 8th, Lynne Whitaker in 10th places with Hannah Knowles in her best ever finish of 32nd.

Many of the Romsey runners stayed behind for a drink at the club house to celebrate the end of a good league and Matt’s success in winning. Other notable league positions were Jimmy Hunt in 14th and Ali Longworth in 46th places. The ladies also had great results with Amanda Hull finishing 7th, Penny Jennings, 32nd and Janet Eager 39th.

Pub After RR10 On Wednesday!!

To celebrate the end of the RR10 series, and to congratulate Matt
Hammerton on winning the series, we intend to have a beverage after
the race at IBM on Wednesday. Dependant on weather we'll either stay
at the pavilion at IBM, or go to the Dolphin.
So bring your wallets!

Last Minute Great South Run Place

Below is a copy of an e-mail I received offering a charity place for the forth coming Great South Run. If you are interested feel feel to download the entry form found here or contact the organisers direct.

I was wondering if you could help me please? We have 6 places left for the Great South Run that takes place in Portsmouth on Sunday 25th October. The ballot entry has closed for this race so the only way to gain a place is through a charity. We are only asking for £34 registration fee and for runners to raise what they can for Rett Syndrome Association UK.

Rett syndrome is a complex neurological disorder which is genetic in origin. It affects mainly females and a few males. Although present at birth, it becomes more evident during the second year, when regression occurs and acquired skills are lost. People with Rett syndrome are profoundly and multiply disabled and highly dependant on others for their needs throughout their lives. The money raised will be used to provide support, help and advice to those whose lives are touched by Rett Syndrome, including families, carers and professionals. We promote and fund research into therapeutic treatment, as well as towards an eventual cure.

I have attached a registration form to pass onto anyone who is interested in supporting us. This will need to be completed and returned with £34 registration fee before 28th August so we can book their place with Bupa.

Many thanks

WELL DONE!!

To Matt Hammerton of our humble Club who has been crowned this years RR10's individual winner!!

And so the golfers of old had long gone as the municipal course in Eastleigh at the rear of the Fleming Park Leisure Centre was allowed to become overgrown and slowly returned to nature.......however ideal for all those RR10 runners looking for an ideal location as Lordshill Runners searched for a last minute venue for their race. The sun was shining brightly and it was a hot and sticky evening as various coloured vests wandered across the playing fields to the start area, no doubt a few with either fond or painful memories of having done the Eastleigh 10km at the same place earlier in the year.

Soon the recognisable blue and yellow tops of our intrepid runners from Romsey began to amass, choosing under a nearby tree for shade purposes, but alas due to Nick being injured and not present unable to achieve his erection of the the Club Flag for others to migrate towards. This didn't stop our runners from making a lovely collection of baggage and then heading off into the golf course to try and make sense of the course. With a listed distance of just 4.2 miles it was going to be short and sharp, but trying to work out the course with the narrow tracks and switchbacks was going to prove to be difficult. However a quick run round soon discovered that there was going to be a a slight hill needing to be ascended twice as well as a few other features such as bridges and sand pits to play in.

With a long wander back down the playing fields the start line was presented and everybody jostled for position looking for familiar faces to run with. It was a fast start across the field, through the trees and then onto the golf course proper. It was then two laps with several parts of the course being quite hard to negotiate with steep downhill turns on concrete and loose stones, through to sharp uphill bursts with some parts of the course being totally blotted out when the sun hit your eyes. The switchbacks gave the opportunity for the quickies to see the less quickies and visa a versa, all in all a good challenging course and I personally feel one to do again next year.

Soon the runners began to complete their laps and see the finish line approaching and a big well done to all 25 who completed the course and then had to wander half way down it again to get to the drinks table. The above picture was taken post race and I think everybody is looking quite fit and refreshed, alas Karen may have been feeling so tired she felt the need to lie down!

Updated Pentathlon Results

A full round up compiled again by Hannah covering the New Forest 10 and other events can be found by clicking here.

The location for the next heat of this years RR10 series was at the Itchen Valley Country Park, hosted by Eastleigh Running Club. It soon became apparent that car parking was going to be at a premium, but some fast thinking by the organisers directed the incoming cars onto the field. A check of the route board showed it to be different from previous years with the course almost matching concentric circles getting shorter each time, and a distance of 4.5 miles. Soon the yellow and blue tops of Romsey were swarming everywhere with runners warming up around the field and through the woods. As the start approached anxious glances were cast upwards to the ominous huge black cloud but just a few spots put in an appearance before the start.

From the start it was diagonally across the field and then the first outer circle. With so many runners it was quite compact with many using the outside of the field to make progress. It was then back across the field and into the wooded area. Care was needed for low branches and the twisting course through the trees but then it was again popping out into the open area. Alas the downfall of overhanging trees is that sometimes the Garmin has a wobbly losing its track, which meant the course was not 5.27 miles long, but this unfortunately made the finish appear much sooner than it actually was. Many runners ran hard after the previous Monday nights 5km Time Trial through the pouring rain, but overall many got good positions!

Also check out if you were snapped by Eastleigh by heading over to http://www.eastleighrunningclub.org.uk/rr10.htm

The local semi-pro super fit athletes who had hired the track that evening were surprised to see the bleachers slowly filling up with people starting to get dressed in a multitude of coloured running singlets and comparing spike lengths on their shoes. Yes, it was the annual Mile of Miles Relay, this year held at the exceptional facilities of the Southampton Running Track. In fact the facilities were so good, with many runners experiencing a proper track for the first time it wasn't long before the runners from all the Clubs taking part sneaked onto the hallowed ground to try and get those early warm up laps in.

With a few trial runs to get the feel of the surface and Nick frantically doing the admin job of wondering which poor peeps were going to have to run twice in order to get two teams entered it wasn't long before the organisers called the first entrants up to the start line. The strategy was simple, run like billy do four times around the track and slap the hand of the next guy or gal. The race was off and as expected Southampton Running Club took an early lead. The first change over for Romsey was between Jimmy Hunt and Peter Cork.....described by Jimmy as a well oiled change over, and the collective supporters playing the game of "Name That Tune" and deciding on "Pat a Cake Bakers Man".

However, soon the changeovers were slick and both our teams were hammering out their collective miles. It soon became apparent that the air that evening was unnaturally dry, with many runners after their effort sounding like 40 a day high tar smokers as they tried to stop their throat from constricting up! Well done to everybody who took part, especially Matt Hammerton, Jimmy Hunt, and Jim Wright for making up the numbers and running twice that evening. The sense of team support was fantastic, with lots of cheering and encouragement as each member completed another lap of their leg. Romsey’s A team put in a sterling performance with 9 legs completed in under 6 minutes each, earning them 4th place overall in a total time of 56:23. Romsey’s B team also put in an excellent performance finishing in 7th place in 62:17, ahead of the A teams of two other clubs. A great evening was enjoyed by all, with friendly banter and team camaraderie the overall winner. Individual times are below;

The Re-Match!!

Romsey Road Runners v Halterworth Harriers
The Re-Match
Sunday 11th October Kick Off 2.30pm
Mountbatten School

Recently I have arranged with Halterworth the idea of having another friendly football match. For the newer members or those with poor memories the first match was in October 2007 and Halterworth Harriers won 5-2. I had no hesitation in agreeing to the idea.

A signup sheet will be available at club nights at a later date (September). However please use this information as an early reminder to keep the afternoon available at least. After the match there will be drinks and cakes.

The match is open to ALL club members (whether young or old, male or female) everyone who signs the sheet will play depending on numbers for how long. Also for all those who wish to watch and support please come along. There will be no charge for playing and a proper referee has been arranged.

ALL PARTICIPATION IS DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK-NO RESPONSIBILITY WILL BE AGAINST EITHER CLUB OR MEMBERS INVOLVED.

Many Thanks
Chris Lane

(Did this man miss his true vocation in life??)

A new picture viewing program is now being trialed, so bear with me as the few glitches are hopefully ironed out and pictures are slowly uploaded.

However all the latest pictures from our recent successful Braishfield 5M Race are now on the system, so just click the "PHOTOS" button on the right and head over to the new site!!

It was a warm and sultry evening as the runners of Romsey gathered for the second installment of this years 5km Time Trial around the lanes of Braishfield. With some new faces trying it for the first time, Jane our session leader did a grand job of trying to organise every one into the correct groups so all finished at roughly the same time.

With a few more questions on the actual course, with the relevant advice of just keep going left the runners started off.

The latest results are now collated and can be found by clicking here, So head on over and see how you compare with last time, or in the placings!

New Home Run Event!!

Hazel Smith will be hosting the next Home Run, details are,

Thursday 18th June at 6.30pm

"The Mill" East Tytherley Road, Lockerley, SO51 0LW

Parking in the field in East Dean Road.

£2 cost to cover food/drink etc.

These events are great fun and well worth trying out with a 4.5 - 6 mile off-road run followed by some socialising afterwards. Car sharing from Romsey Rapids is always an idea too.

It was a breezy but warm evening as the runners from Southampton negotiated the arduous A35 and then followed the roads and tracks to the Wilverley Inclosure near to Sway for the third race of the RR10 series. The conditions were good with a bit of breeze to cool you down but with the sun in abundance.

Due to injury Nick wasn't with us to try and improve on his erection skills of last week (of the Romsey flag!), however David Nixon with Hannah White lending him a useful hand, managed a commendable 2 minutes and 33 seconds. Soon the field began to fill with runners from the various Clubs and a quick check of the route board showed a change in course from last year and a run of around 4.77 miles.

After warming up it was the saunter up to the start and after jostling for position it was the off. The name of the game at the beginning was a good pair of sunglasses, as running directly into the lowering sun with the numerous tracks, ruts lumps and bumps to negotiate proved a slight hazard. The course was the type of trying to choose the small pathway that might give you the edge on the runner in front but then realising it was the wrong choice and hopping over to the next one. It was again the type of run that needed constant concentration and eyes wide open. The course was definitely a dry and dusty one, as very soon you felt you were chewing on grit!

Once the field had spread out slightly it was a sharp right into a wooded area and then faced with several uphill switch-backs that spread the field out further. The whole course was then a combination of tracks and hills in a wide circular loop back to the start area, with wide open spaces affording you clear view of who you had to catch in front.

The final segment was a large loop that allowed you to see well ahead to the finish line and that rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of the super speedy runners well ahead. However if any thing was going to motivate you to sprint for the finish, the huge shadow of the runner behind looming up on you due to the rear facing sun was going to do it.

Well done to the thirty two runners who took part and crossed the finish line, however the midges again saw their opportunity for a late evening snack descending upon our runners which caused the field to clear quickly. And congratulations to Clive Hearn for finishing the race with both of his shoes still attached to his feet!!

Don't forget the next race is at the Deerleap Inclosure on the 3rd of June starting at 07.30pm. Just use the Otter and Owl Sanctuary car park same as race two.

Hannah's results write up of the latest RR10 can be found by clicking here.

Annual 10 By One Mile Relay

The annual ten by one-mile relay will take place on Wednesday 1st July. We should be able to field at least two and probably three teams. Please sign up at a Monday club night or send an email to Nick Berryman here.

Romsey Road Runners - Google Groups

The Romsey Road Runners' Google Group has been set up to allow us to communicate via email. In order to join the Romsey Road Runners' Google Group you must either be invited to join or you must apply for membership and be accepted. In either case you must have a Google account before joining. Google insists on this in order to verify that you are supplying a valid email address and that you are not a rogue computer program masquerading as intelligent life.

You can also log on to the group site to view any threads or to create or append to a thread.

The Google group is intended to be used for news, views and discussions, for arranging lifts to races and so on. It should not be used for anything of a lasting nature - old stuff will be removed regularly. It is particularly useful if you cannot come to one of the club nights because you will get an email to tell you what is going on.

It was a perfect evening around the lanes of Braishfield as the assembled runners of Romsey gathered for the first annual 5km time trial of 2009! The weather was warm and the birds sang as after dodging the traffic on the warm up out to the start, and the course was explained.

Anyone doing this for the first time was amazed to see altitude sickness pills and wedges of cotton wool being handed around for the anticipated nosebleeds, as the old hands knew the "undulating nature" of the course around the Braishfield area could cause these symptoms as this was going to be a fast run with many a sharp incline or two. There were also a few glazed expressions as runners tried to fathom out exactly how the handicap rules worked and what was the best strategy? Should I run slowish today and so hope to get a less of a handicap on the final run, or was it best to go flat out? I do believe that most people would have a greater chance of correctly explaining Einstein's Law of Relativity, however the concept of this event is a simple one. Run the course as fast as you can, get down to the track sessions during the spring and summer months at Mountbatten School, and then see how well you have improved with your speed work at the end!

Well done to all those who took part and you can all see your times by clicking here. Every time the time trial is ran this page will be updated so you can chart your progress.

This week it was the turn of the local wildlife to be startled as again hundreds of local runners descended on the Longdown Enclosure in Ashurst for round two of the RR10 series. No less than 34 Romsey Road Runners collated near to the welcoming shade of a local tree (albeit the sun seemed to be conspicuous by its absence) A quick warm up down the track soon revealed a different start line and thus rumors of a new course from last year, this time being listed as just over 4 miles. The start drew near and being at the back making my way down I could not be more amazed at the shear number of runners collecting en masse, giving a clear indication that these runs are gaining in popularity. With a few moments of confusion of exactly which direction the race would start, and some jostling for position it was the off.

This course was a complete reversal of the one held at the RVCP two weeks beforehand. With the course being different from last year there was no long sweeping start allowing runners to stretch out and gain their natural placings, but instead it was hard right on a forest track that meant little movement as the runners were packed in tight. There was also no opportunity to look around and admire the beautiful New Forest scenery, as if your eyes weren't glued to the ground at the numerous tree roots, ruts, and mini-potholes, (the foot deep ones were kindly pointed out by the marshals when approaching), then you were seriously going to become unstuck and possibly taking a tumble.

On the subject of becoming unstuck, this race was the first time some of our Club runners had done an off-road route. Clive Hearn the case in example who had the misfortune of finding the one and only patch of mud in the forest that was perfectly shaped to suck off ones shoe, and alas he was then presented with a steady torrent of runners to battle against to go and reclaim it. This course had everything! Tight turns, switchbacks, ditches, numerous inclines, even a water feature with some dodgy looking logs to try and traverse over. I think it was one of the more challenging ones that has been attempted, luckily with it being reasonably dry.

Soon the front runners were in and claiming their positions, luckily the start being at the well known main marshalling point. With congratulations all round, memories of the midge biting episode from last year soon surfaced as people could feel them starting to feast, so soon the field quickly cleared. However I think the real congratulations of the evening should go to Nick Berryman. Under huge pressure of around twenty spectators, a north to north-east medium to strong wind, he was able to attain his erection quicker than last time in a record time of 1 minute, 29.17 seconds - WELL DONE!! (but no pressure for the next meet, which by the way is on the 20th of May at the Wilverly Enclosure. Listen out at Club nights for meeting at the Romsey Rapids car park for environmentally friendly car sharing - see you there!!

BBQ for all Marshalls and RRR's after the Beer Race!!

What more incentive do you need to help out marshalling the forth coming Beer Race then a top quality BBQ for all helpers at a palrty cost of £3 per person payable on the day!! Christine Saunders will soon be distributing forms for those wishing to partake in this culinary fest.

It has come to the notice of the "longer standing" members of the Club, that in September 2010, Romsey Road Runners will be celebrating its 25 year anniversary!!

With this in mind it is planned for a celebratory evening to be held to commemorate the momentous event, and so the Committee would like you think of what you would like to see happen on the evening. So start thinking what you'd like and either speak to a Committee member directly or you can e-mail Christine the Social Secretary directly here.

Full results of the latest events with timings have been compiled by Hannah and can be found here.

With the nations attention firmly placed on the country's premiere running race a.k.a. the London Marathon, thought should be spared to a small corner of the Test Valley in Hampshire to a little place called Houghton......

A motley crew of Romsey Road Runners gathered under beautiful sunshine for the annual 11km trail race of this yearly event. Conditions being in total contrast of last years wind and rain the small car park was soon filled with participants either parking their vehicles or stretching on the grass and risking serious injury from being run over (Tony!).

Paul Bradley alas suffering the remnants of a cold was unable to run but kindly took the group photograph after spending a huge amount of time trying to fit all peeps in due to burst mattress hair-do's. Soon the start came around and first the bikers were briefed and allowed to start. The great thing with this event is that there is various bike and running courses of different distances but each one has been planned so not to clash. Soon all runners had gathered at the start for the off!!

The race began with a gradual uphill track session that went for a mile or so and then cut into lanes and tracks. The course in my humble opinion is one of the prettiest by far, with any runner hoping to focus on a PB very soon losing their concentration as they admire the scenery and winding woodland tracks with bluebells sprouting around their feet, coupled with segments of the Test Way. The course has another uphill section at about the three mile mark, after which its either flat or downhill adding to the enjoyment of the event.

This year the section through the open field was well signed thus causing no runners to lose their way and then a run along the river back to the village hall to the finish. Karen Keane with added encouragement from fellow club members was able to pull out a sprint finish for a mystery runner behind her that may or may not have existed, with other runners coming in to the delights of bottled water, orange segments, tea and cake. This race is highly recommended as a small and friendly event, with a low-key, forgiving off-road course that is ideal for that Sunday run or trying out a trail race for the first time.

And so the local patrons of the Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley Abbey looked around in confusion as their quiet spring evening was suddenly inundated with numerous people jogging onto the park and erecting various flags of hues and colours denoting their running clubs as the first RR10 event of 2009 got underway. Not to be outdone, Nick Berryman showed off his own erection skills by quickly raising the Romsey Road Runners colours so incoming fellow members could join the ever growing thong who started to warm up for the start.

Matt Hammerton arrived in his usual style of cycling to the event, but got his timings completely wrong thus arriving too early and not being able to do a seamless transition from jumping off his bike to join the start but instead had to wait a few minutes. Once hydrated and warmed up after a few laps of the park, and with a quick check of the distance and course the RRR contestants bimbled over to the start while everyone waited for the late few due to the usual horrendous traffic problems of Hamble Lane, but not before they had all been rounded up for the "Team Photo".

We were then led to the official start and again with the hooter going and everyone suddenly realising the race had started and they'd better stop having a natter which is the attraction of these informal meets, they were off. As last year, the race started with a few laps around the field which gave all the runners a brief glimpse of the front racers before they disappeared under the trees and up the gravel path to the circular route. It was perfect conditions with a warm evening and unlike last year no where the force of wind that had been blowing and so the pace was fast.

Many a debate had raged that evening before the race on which shoes to be worn, off-roads or flatties? However it soon became apparent under the twisting pathways and into the wooded section that the ground although moist was suitable for flats and had not been completely deluged under recent rains. This caused the pace to be quick and very soon runners were on their second lap. Again there was the short "out and back again" reverse part of the course which gave each Romsey runner the opportunity to give a bit of encouragement to their fellow man or woman as they passed shoulder to shoulder.

With the second trek through the woods, car park and twisting pathways and shouts from lots of small children in green uniforms (cubs I think?), it was the sprint back up the gravel to the finish line and a quick check to see if the course really was 4.66 miles or the Garmin lied like a cheap Japanese watch!

With the early finishers giving shouts of encouragement to other Romsey finishers and Nick bravely taking the tickets of the finishers many runners realised they had had a good run up places from the previous year. With two weeks to go thoughts were now going to the next RR10 on the 6th of May at the Longdown Inclosure, Ashurst... see you there!!

A massive well done to all those Romsey Road Runners who did today's London Marathon in very warm conditions. Hot off the press are the finishers with links to their full timing details.

Session

A word from our session leaders Jane Field........

What a great summer training with record numbers of RRRs joining in the Braishfield efforts – 47 was the max, with most Mondays at over 40 runners. I’m sure the Braishfield lanes will be much quieter without us. Thursday track sessions have been great as well with lots of people joining in with the various efforts – some easier to explain and run than others.

The Braishfield 5km club handicap will be run on 7th September for all runners to compete against the handicapper for the shield. The job of handicapper has been getting harder every year and I anticipate a tough time again this year; bribes could be accepted!

You can find the new schedule in this newsletter. Soon we will have to start the town and hill sessions after a couple of weeks using Crampmoor lane and the Sports centre pitches. I have scheduled the first Thursday of Oct & Nov to be held at Mountbatten school tennis courts (floodlit) for some fun effort sessions!

With the dark nights please remember that there are club Safety Guidelines in my folder on a club night or on the website – so please make yourself aware of these for club sessions and when you are training on your own. Fluorescent bibs will be needed soon, shame I know.

I hope you all enjoy participating in the training sessions and, despite my post London malaise, are hopefully improving all of our running.

Keep running!

Interested in getting involved?
There are level 1 and Fitness in Running and Walking courses available which the club should be able to fund for ANY standard of runner – it would be great to have leaders for each group for the Autumn/Winter sessions. Course dates on EA website or contact me.

Could you organise a Home Run?

Do you have a favourite run that you would like to share with club members?
Do you have a favourite pub or other place you run from?
Could you organise a club run?

A home run is a gentle, social run from a member’s home or other suitable local venue (such as pub or forest car park). Routes are normally 6 miles, with a shorter option available, and a leader and sweeper will be needed. The run is followed by refreshments organised by the host (usually sandwiches, cakes and squash) for which members pay £2. These could be organised instead of a Monday or Thursday session, or at a weekend. In the past we have had a home run every month between May to September and they are a great way for members to socialise, run and explore a different running area.

The club will provide a minimum of £50 in advance for the host to spend. On the night a committee member will collect the £2 from each member and the host keeps any monies above the £50 already provided.

If there is anybody who might consider hosting a home run please contact myself or another committee member.

Keep Running.

Chairman

When I agreed to take on the role of club chairman a year ago, (or was I possibly conned in the nicest possible way by Jane) I really was not sure what I was letting myself in for. What has impressed me is how hard the committee has worked to help others enjoy our club, their running and achieve their goals. They are a very talented and hard working team that the entire club benefits from, many thanks to all of them. Also thanks to the many club members who are prepared to help out in general, although even more would be even better!

The club has had an incredibly successful year thanks to its enthusiastic members and a great committee. Whichever way you measure success I think we have achieved it.

Our membership is well up and should have grown to about 120 by the end of this year; which I think is the highest ever. Well done to Steve Davies for his efforts though out the year. I must admit I thought there would be a peak of work for Steve at the start of the year and quiet for the rest but it seems to have been manic for most of the time.

Possibly the most impressive success has been the sheer number of runners that regularly attend our training sessions on Mondays and Thursdays. A couple of weeks ago I counted 54, with over 40 being the norm for a Monday and over 30 for Thursdays. We might not be the biggest club in Hampshire but few can have such a high percentage turnout for regular training sessions. Credit for this must go to Jane Carter for her fantastic achievements in this area. Few will realise how much effort Jane puts into the coaching, creating sessions to cater for all abilities, helping improve performance while keeping an eye on safety the whole time. A victim of her own success, trying to get 40+ runners out and back safely is quite a challenge. I am not sure who it was but someone said it was like herding cats, an excellent analogy in my opinion. People like turning up at the club and running without having to think too much, sometimes neglecting pedestrians and road users. I would like to encourage everyone to take responsibility for their own and others safety, it is completely unrealistic and unreasonable to expect Jane to do everything. Also thanks to Wendy Couper, Gill Callus and Chris Lane for helping out on a regular basis. In the next year we are having a big push to get more people qualified as coaches which should help considerably.

Many aspects of the running of the club the average member does not know happen. Lynne Whitaker is our club secretary and as well as organising and minuting committee meetings and the AGM, also acts as our main interface to the rest of the running world. This includes registering members with England Athletics, obtaining our club London Marathon places and negotiations.

You will soon hear from Liz Slade how healthy the club finances are. We are not profit making and want to use the money in the best way for the club. Liz has been able to keep on top of our spending and projected finances which have enabled us to pay for additional coaches to be trained and provide a subsidy for social events as well as many minor expenses. Sadly even running revolves round money and many thanks to Liz that others don’t have to worry about it.

Christine Saunders has done a great job organising social events this year with really good turn outs, particularly for the presentation evening barn dance and hog roast last week, the pasta party at the Old House at Home and the post beer race BBQ. We are definitely more than just a running club and I think the social aspects add considerably to our popularity. In addition we had some great home runs and club walks which add variety and everyone looks forward to. There was also the club trip to Cornwall that Nick Berryman organised which was tremendous fun, I am looking forward to the next one in Exmoor in May.

While Nick Berryman is our fixtures secretary, he has done so much more this year. Well done for being voted Romsey Road Runner of the Year, very well deserved in my opinion and obviously many others. Over the last year there has been very high turn outs at races for the club, with many members enjoying the competitive part of running. It has been so nice to turn up at RR10s and CC6s and see a mass of blue and gold vests from our club. I did initially start to list the outstanding individual performances at this point but it soon became apparent that there were just too many to mention

Hannah White continues to get us good coverage in the local press although frequently the size of the headline and supporting picture bear no relationship to the achievements of our runners. It was a little frustrating that the CC6 that we hosted last winter filled the entire back page of the Romsey Advertiser but there was no mention that it was organised by the Romsey Road Runners who also provided the pictures for the article. Never mind, it raised the profile for running in the area which is good. While it is always nice to read about our achievements there is also the important aspect that this publicity encourages others into joining the club. Well done Hannah for this weekly write up.

Kit secretary Greg Roulston is another of the team who does a great job. Not only does Greg purchase the kit and bring it along to the club for members but he also has spent time investigating possible changes to the range. He has also provided memorable moments by modeling selected items occasionally.

Heidi Williams joined the Committee with no specific role and helped out whenever she could, covering when other members were not available. More recently she has taken on the race book, keeping it updated with entry forms and bringing it to club nights.

Matt Hammerton is another who has been helping out the Committee and has been increasing his involvement with the club

The newsletter has been a bit variable this year due to personal time constraints. Thanks in anticipation to Matt Hammerton for offering to take over the Press Secretary role.

The Braishfield Beer Race was another great success with many members of the club helping out. Thanks must go to Jeremy Hartley the race director and Nick Berryman, Derek Kelly and Jan Burnage who made up the race committee. We are particularly grateful to Fullers for their primary sponsorship of the event; well done to Derek for negotiating that and thanks also for agreeing to take over as race director.

Once again Mark Adams took circuit training at the Romsey School on Fridays which is very popular with those that participate. If you have not been to one of these sessions I suggest you try it. Good all round condition helps reduce injuries and is good cross training.

Ali Longworth has put a lot of effort into the web site this year and it is one of the primary ways that new members hear about the club. A good web site needs to be regularly updated and Ali does just that for the club. In addition Ali writes many of the articles himself in a very entertaining style which adds to the interest considerably.

Complementing the press articles, newsletter and the web site for communications is the Romsey Road Runners Google Groups. Thanks to David Page for maintaining this with regular updates to members. David is going to do a sales pitch for this later in the meeting and I strongly encourage more people to join in and contribute. The more people involved, the more useful it becomes.

While there have been many excellent results from our runners there has been one notable, high profile, failure – the football match against Halterworth Harriers. It was apparently closer than the score would suggest! Thanks to Chris Lane for organising this event. It is great that a town the size of Romsey can support two thriving running clubs, long may the friendly rivalry continue.

There have been many issues over the last year but there is one that is probably getting worse due to the success of the club; that is the parking at the Woodley Village Hall. On a Monday evening there are other users of the hall that have a start time after ours and have on occasions found there to be no parking spaces left when they arrive. We must respect that others have as much right to the car park as members of our club and I encourage people to walk, jog or car share as much as possible to reduce the problem.

As I mentioned earlier, with our success has come new members. Let’s make a real effort to keep our reputation as a friendly club and make sure that we welcome all, whatever their ability or age. It can be quite intimidating for some new members who don’t know anyone at the club and/or lack confidence in their abilities. If you see someone you don’t know, make an effort to talk with them and make them welcome. It has been noticed that we throw complete beginners straight in with the normal training. Gill Callus has volunteered to help inexperienced people, or those getting back into running, to build their fitness so that they are not pushed too hard initially and can enjoy their training with us.

There is always scope for improvements, if anyone has any ideas, please pass them on to a committee member or even better join in and help make it happen.

I would like to finish off by thanking everyone for making it such an enjoyable year at the club for me and to apologise for not being able to mention everyone who has helped support me and the club.
