'Last weekend's much publicised Great South Run held in Portsmouth and Southsea
turned out to be a Super Sunday for Romsey Road Runners' Lynne Whitaker when
she achieved first lady in her age category for the 10 mile course, finishing
in 1:08:17 and 287th overall in a field of 19,500! Five other runners from
the club also completed the race with Liz Slade achieving a personal best
time for the distance in 1:24:27. Ian Ralph is running well and finished in
1:10:32. Other Results: Chris Selfe 1:18:08, Lindsey Dunford 1:32:35 and Michelle
Shaw 1:48:15.
For the third year running, conditions were very wet although not quite as
gusty. However, the weather didn't deter thousands of spectators as they flocked
to see Paula Radcliffe in action. As always, there was a good crowd all along
the route including fellow club members Heidi Williams and Ian Whyton.
On the same day, three hardy souls braved The 14th Stickler, 1500 feet of
climbing over the Dorset Three Peaks. Jane Field finished just in front of
the first husky dog in 1:30:18, Steve Davies in 1:44:21 and Wendy Couper in
1:53:50.
In the perfect conditions of a cool overcast day, Alistair Longworth went
home for the weekend and with everything going according to plan, achieved
a personal best time of 1:33:44 at the 27th Stroud Half Marathon.
On Saturday Wendy George completed the Beachy Head Marathon (which turned
out to be 27 miles) in 5 hours 1 minute. The scenic course runs through the
South Downs and is one of the biggest off-road marathons in the UK.
