News below of Matt Hammerton's title win of
the RR10 series:
With one race still to go, Matt Hammerton of Romsey Road Runners has clinched
the men’s title of the RR10 league. Hammerton, who didn’t actually
compete in last weeks race at Fleming Park, has comfortably won the series
with his 5 finishes placing him at the top of the board, his lead now unassailable.
The ladies title has also been won by Laura Brenton of Team Southampton.
Race 8 of the series was held on the now retired golf course at Fleming Park. Used mainly by dog walkers, the fairways made for an excellent cross country course with some challenging inclines but an unforgiving grass surface. The looping course was well marshalled by hosts Lordshill Road Runners and it was encouraging to be able to see runners ahead winding their way to the finish and to be cheered on by fellow club members as you neared the end. An excellent turn out of 25 runners from Romsey once again brought in strong results, with Jane Field first lady home for the club closely followed by Penny Jennings and Heidi Williams, and Jimmy Hunt first Romsey man home with Ali Longworth and Jim Wright soon after. The final race of the series takes place at Hursley Park on August 19.
Taking on another challenge entirely, Ali Longworth took part
in the Salisbury 5-4-3-2-1 Trail Marathon on Sunday. The undulating yet scenic
route travels throughout Wessex taking in 5 rivers, 4 hills, 3 country estates,
2 castles and 1 cathedral. The family event incorporates various distance
runs and Longworth chose to compete in the full marathon distance finishing
in a time of 4 hours and 6 seconds placing him 46th overall and 8th in his
category, and having thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful scenery and friendly
atmosphere en route.
