The RR10 series came to a successful conclusion last week with 353 competitors taking part. Although the individual title places had already been won, runners turned out for one last race to try and better their overall ranking. The warm summer’s evening and picturesque grounds of Hursley House made the tough 3 lap course all the more bearable, encouraging some outstanding performances from Romsey Road Runners. In particular, Amanda Hull and Lynne Whitaker came in 8th and 10th places respectively and Hannah Knowles gained her best finish of 32nd. Many of the Romsey runners stayed on for a drink at the club house to celebrate the end of a good league and Matt Hammerton’s success in winning the men’s title. Other notable overall league positions include Jimmy Hunt in 14th and Ali Longworth in 46th places. The ladies also had great results with Amanda Hull finishing 7th, Penning Jennings 32nd and Janet Eager 39th.
The 10km distance has also been a popular event in recent weeks, with four of Romsey’s runner’s competing. Two days after getting married, Janet Eager celebrated by competing in the Sidmouth 10k. An unusual way to start their honeymoon, the newlyweds took on the tough off-road race which boasts a friendly atmosphere and excellent marshalling to encourage you along the very hilly course. Eager was pleased to finish in 61 minutes.
Steve Davies and Gill Callus also headed to the coast to take part in the Jurassic Coast 10k at the weekend. Another tough off-road event with steep climbs and scary descents which were made enjoyable by the fantastic scenery. Davies finished in 50:05 and Callus in 61:05.
The Everton 10k attracted Ali Longworth to Lymington, also on Sunday. This is the second of a series of five races and is also described as undulating and rural. Longworth made a fast start and was able to sustain the pace in the hot weather to achieve his personal best time of 39 minutes 29 placing him 14th in his category and 19th overall.
Wendy Couper was also successful in recent weeks competing
at the Castle Combe Duathlon. Held on the race circuit, the event consisted
of a 5km run, followed by a 21km cycle and a further 3k run to finish. Couper
thoroughly enjoyed the event finishing in 1 hour 42 and winning first place
in her age group – not a bad way to celebrate her birthday!
