It was a double success for Romsey Road Runners on Sunday as the new CC6 series got off to a start. Nick Berryman and Amanda Hull created an opportunity for a club first as they both took first place in the men’s and ladies rankings. The CC6, a cross country league held for and hosted by local running clubs in south Hampshire, are held once a month throughout the winter and provide an excellent and friendly environment in which to race. Sunday’s fixture was held at Beaulieu Road Station and covered between 4 and 5 miles off-road. Berryman and Hull’s fantastic result was supported by 19 other members of the club, all achieving great positions. For the ladies, Jane Carter, Lynda Brown and Penny Jennings all finished within the first 19 ladies, whilst Jim Wright, Steve Reed, Chris Brown and Matt Hurst made the top 28 for the men. New club runner Paul Willis in his debut CC6 race achieved an excellent 37th place. The league moves on to Dibden Enclosure in November.
Romsey also had a strong presence at the Salisbury half marathon on Sunday. The annual event, run by the Fire Fighters Charity, starts and finishes opposite the city’s fire station whilst the course takes in a loop around the picturesque Woodford Valley. Tony King and Liz Slade both achieved personal bests with King finishing in 1:35:45, placing him 25th senior male, and Slade finishing in 1:57:13, placing her 4th female V50. Ken West and Wendy George also achieved category placings, with West completing the course to finish 5th male V60 in 1:49:19, whilst George achieved 7th female V40 in 1:53:33.
Further a field, the Tadley 10 mile near Basingstoke attracted Jimmy Hunt and Hannah White to compete. Another rural road race, this time around the villages on the Hampshire-West Berkshire border, was well organised and supported and attracted approximately 160 runners. Running in their first race of this distance, Hunt finished 6th in his age category in 62:12, whilst White came 5th in her age category in a time of 83:18.
