The Endurance Life coastal series got underway in Dorset on Saturday, with four intrepid Romsey Road Runner’s taking part. The series of 7 events runs throughout the winter and into next Spring with each fixture offering the choice of a 10km, half or full marathon on coastal trails around the UK.

Tamatha Ryan, who regularly competes in off-road distance events, took on the full marathon distance which was like no other race she has taken part in before. The marathon included tough inclines, a long stretch on the beach and thigh-deep water to negotiate, all a challenge within themselves, but which created a sense of camaraderie amongst the competitors. Despite this, Ryan’s determination to finish earnt her 3rd place lady in just over 5 hours. Ian Ralph, Wendy George and Hazel Smith all competed in the half marathon distance and were equally challenged by the conditions and terrain, finishing in 2:14:57, 2:49:51 and 3:15:43 respectively.

Romsey also fielded 17 runners at Sunday’s CC6 fixture at Dibden Enclosure. The second race of the series saw Nick Berryman again bring the club home, finishing in 3rd place. Jim Wright and Steve Reed also ran well finishing 19th and 23rd. For the ladies Jane Carter was first back finishing in 11th place, with Lynda Brown close behind in 16th matching her position from the first fixture. Derek Kelly, Anna Duignan and Diane Cross all ran in their first race of the series. Both the ladies and mens teams are now in 6th place overall.
