Club Handicap

This year’s race will be on Monday, September 5th. Although everyone can run in it, to be in the competition you have to have run at least one of this Summer’s four time trials (and therefore have a handicap time). The last T/T is on 22 August. The race will be a mass start. In the past the trophy has been won both by the first finisher and the last, so everyone has a chance.

Royal Wootton Bassett Tri - 2016
Royal Wootton Bassett Tri – 2016

Four RRRs travelled to Royal Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire to take part in the Sprint Triathlon last weekend. The triathlon consisted of a 400m swim, 20km bike and a final 5k run. Conditions were perfect with lots of sunshine and a gentle breeze making the cycle ride hard but enjoyable through the beautiful countryside. Fastest time for Romsey with a PB and 2nd in his age category was Derek Kelly in a time of 1:27:04 , (9:04 swim, 44:55 bike, 30:31 run). Next was Alice Lane, 8th in age category also with a PB of 1:30:17 (9:18 swim, 51:24 bike, 25:49 run) followed by Liz Slade, 2nd in age category in a time of 1:37:41 (13:17 swim, 52:46 bike, 27:19 run) and finally Julia Abab achieving a PB and 1st in age category, in a time of 1:40:58 (13:40 swim, 56:09 bike, 27:28 run).

In the third RR10 race of the season (which is the second one that Romsey were allowed to run in due to the new “drop out” system this season) a small but hardy group braved the elements to run 7.5km at Wilverley. Those that came out were rewarded with glorious sunshine, a bit of mud and quite a few hills! The men’s team finished 5th which is higher than was achieved in any race last season, whilst the ladies managed two teams coming in 10th and 20th.

Harewood Forest 10k - 2016
Harewood Forest 10k – 2016

It was a great start to May for the Romsey Road Runners, with a hardy bunch of 8 taking part in this year’s relentlessly hilly Harewood Forest 10k.  The course was a lovely mix of track, road and grass, with the stunning Wherwell village serving as the perfect backdrop and having the best part of the day’s weather too.

First home for Romsey was Neil Jennings, in an amazing time of 40:18, to bring him home 5th overall.  Next came Rob Webb, in 20th position with a time of 48:00, followed by Hannah Hunt, cruising home in 54:47 to make her 9th lady.  Following home for Romsey was Alice Lane in 56:25, Penny Jennings in 57:52, Julia Abab in 59:28, Anna Duignan in 1:01:00 and Derek Kelly, who crossed the line in 1:05:00.  All fantastic times for what was a demanding 10k course on tired legs, just one week after many of the runners completed the Southampton Half!  Next up for Derek, Julia, Alice and Liz is the Wootton Bassett Triathlon on the 15th.

It was a 10k fest for Romsey Road Runners last weekend.

In the Eastleigh 10k, four RRRs officially finished – plus one of our second claim runners. (A couple of other RRRs were spotted but don’t appear on the results… hmm). The largest 10k in the South, with 2,800 entries, this was the 32nd running of the Eastleigh 10k. The race had a new sponsor this year, Hendy Ford, and the lead runners were led around the course by a red Mustang! Apart from a short hill around the 3.5km mark, the course is fairly flat and is known as a PB course.

RRR Eastleigh 10k Finishers:

  • James Battle 36:32
  • John Quayle 43:38 PB
  • Colin Waters (running for New Forest Runners) 44:37
  • Nicola Skeats 58:44 PB
  • Bridget Wells 01:00:49 PB (over a minute quicker than last year)

On Saturday, three RRRs “endured” the Beachy Head 10K (actually 7.7 miles) in cold and windy conditions. Said Wendy, “It was, however, dry and very enjoyable – well it was when we had finished!”

Beachy Head 10k finishers:

  • Alice Lane 01:29:00
  • Anna Duignan 01:30:29 (1st FV60 and six minutes quicker than last year!)
  • Wendy Couper 1:46:15 (one minute quicker than last year)

Tamatha Ryan - Larmer Tree Marathon - 2016
Tamatha Ryan – Larmer Tree Marathon – 2016

It was a busy Sunday for Romsey Road Runners last weekend.

Anna Duignan finished first in her age category at the Tempest 10, at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey on Sunday. The aerodrome is the site of BBC’s Top Gear Programme! Anna’s chip time was 1:28:58 and her first place was all the more impressive given that the uppermost age category for women in this race was V55. Anna said, “The weather conditions were favourable, for a change, and as a road race I didn’t miss the usual mud and water that we’ve been experiencing/enjoying recently on off road routes!” Anna was also 26th lady overall (out of 70).
Anna’s daughter, Marie, is no longer in RRR but she also ran the 20 mile race coming 3rd lady out of 229, 2nd in age category, in a time of 2:25:18. Mummy was very proud!
At Larmer Tree Marathon Tam Ryan finished 2nd lady overall, in this rather tough, off road marathon, with a chip time of 3:56:19. The race is organised by White Star Running with several distance options and takes place in the beautiful surroundings of The Larmer Tree Gardens for the start/finish. A Rather tough off road marathon, weather conditions were perfect. Tam was also 34th overall.

Finally, in Devon, three RRRs ran in “The Grizzly” – a 20 mile run in Seaton. Mark was 27th of 1401 runners in 2:41:05. Sue Sleath (running for Hardley Runners) finished 144th in 3:02:39 and John Horton, on his way back after an operation at Christmas finished in 3:39:52.

Well done to all!

On Sunday, 21st February John Quayle and Paul Whitaker ran the Winchester 10k – a race that seems to be predominantly uphill with long inclines and sharp downhills. John finished in 45:11 and Paul was first in his age category in a time of 46:17.

Remember to send your results to [email protected] and try and include a picture and a short description of the race if possible.
