14th January RRR Race Report

This weekend saw two well attended races for the Romsey Road Runners; the 36th annual George Skeates Charity Event in Stockbridge and the 4th CC6 event of the season at Ocknell Campsite.

The George Skeates event is a low key affair with options to walk, run or cycle either around 3 or 8 miles on a cross country course. The event has been running since 1986 after George passed away in a motorsport accident in 1985. It was originally organised by Mike Crossman and is now run by his son Jeb in aid of the George Skeates Benevolent Fund which benefits a number of charities.

This year saw thirteen club members enter the event. Karen Keane said that it’s a “Great charity event. Fabulous scenic route with yummy cakes and raffle to finish. Everyone’s a winner!”

We also saw the 4th CC6 race of the season organised by Hardley Runners and Totton Running Club at Ocknell Campsite in the New Forest. These races are all around 5 miles and are free to members of a number of local clubs including Romsey; they are a fun, low pressure way to get into cross country racing.

Ten Romsey Road Runners competed this weekend, with some great results; Ray Webb coming second in his age category and Jonathan Pillinger-Cork coming third in his. Jonathan said that this week’s race was “Great hilly, muddy and briefly sunny course”.

Blackmore Vale Feb 2015

Tam Ryan completed the Blackmore Vale Half Marathon on Sunday, 7th February in nearby Dorset. Runners started from Bishops Caundle Village Hall, completing a circular route of hilly terrain. The event provides runners with an excellent base for spring marathons. Tam finished in a time of 1:34:38: 1st in her age category and 7th lady overall.

On a roll, and in marathon training, Tam also produced a good finish in the Bramley 10/20 on Sunday, 15th February. This is a very popular race which takes runners on two 10 mile laps from around the rural villages north of Bramley, North Hampshire. Weather conditions were good on the day and Tam had a stonking run, gaining yet another personal best, she finished in 2:25:14.

Also on 15th February, the good conditions greeted a contingency of RRR in the 6th CC6 of the current series at Denny Wood, hosted by Totton Runners. The previous day’s heavy rain made for muddy off road conditions with plenty of waterlogged conditions underfoot with the mud robbing one or two runners of their shoes.

RRR finishers:

Men

  • Neil Jennings, 11th
  • Jonathon Williams, 40th
  • John Quayle, 57th
  • Mark Adams, 66th

Women

  • Jo Weguelin, 12th
  • Becky Tovey, 14th
  • Hannah Shutt, 19th
  • Di Cross, 22nd
  • Penny Jennings, 27th
  • Alice Lane, 29th
  • Sarah Humphries, 35th

The mens team currently lay in 9th position and the women in 7th.

Race 4 of the Winter Cross Country 2014-15 season took place last Sunday.  A proper muddy, undulating 4 and a bit mile route organised by Lordshill and Wessex Clubs took runners from Janesmoor Pond, Stoney Cross through plenty of muddy trails and damp, waterlogged ground.

Romsey sported a good turn out and managed a top 10 runner in each of the women’s and men’s top 10 placings.  Despite the damp, dull morning a lucky 13 RRR’s headed for Janesmoor Pond to slide about in the mud until exhaustion, hopefully somewhere near the finish.
