Weekend Away

The Social team have been making plans for this year’s RRR Weekend Away and we’ve decided to go for the Endurancelife Coastal Trail Series event in Pembrokeshire on Saturday, 2nd May.

These are fantastic, friendly, well-organised events held around stretches of scenic coastline – and often taking in stretches not normally open to the public. They also offer a choice of distances: 10k, half marathon, full marathon and ultra.

To find out more, and enter if you plan to come, go to: www.endurancelife.com then click on Events, then CTS 14-15 then Pembrokeshire. James at EL has very kindly given us a discount code, so when you get to the checkout enter rrrp15 in the code box – this gives you 15% off (NB: previous entrants, it will not operate in conjunction with any prize vouchers). The code is valid until 1 March. These events are extremely popular, so please enter soon to avoid disappointment.

I have looked at hotel options and think the Premier Inn at Haverfordwest (North/A40) is our best bet. It is just 8 miles from race HQ and reasonably priced. They will not offer the lowest rates on group bookings, however, so I suggest we book individually and pick the days/rates that suit us best. The number is 0871 527 9546. At time of writing, the cheapest deal is the Premier Saver (no refunds or amends), which offers 1 room for 2 nights (Fri and Sat) for 2 people for £99 (no breakfast); Friday night only is £39. The sooner you book, the cheaper it is (other options are available).

I suggest we go down on Friday afternoon/evening and return on Sunday morning (though please do what is best for you). I will book a (pasta) restaurant for Friday night and another for Saturday (alternatively, there is the EL Afterparty at the Castle Inn), once I know how many people are going. We can also look at lift shares or possibly a minibus, depending on numbers and drivers. I will also look into a walk or run on Sunday, if anyone fancies that.

If you are planning to come, please let me know so I can keep you informed of arrangements. Family members/partners/friends welcome. I will put some flyers out on club nights asap.

All the best

AGM (and Free Pizza!)

Just a reminder that the Romsey Road Runners AGM is now just two weeks away. Look out for the agenda and supporting documents to be circulated next week.

The club would not function as it does without members volunteering their time to take on roles on the committee. If you would like to become part of the committee and help give back a little something to the club please get in touch. It doesn’t matter whether you are new to the club or have been running with us for years, all volunteers are welcome! The roles we are looking to fill are listed below.

See you all on the 5th November.

RRR Committee
COMMITTEE VACANCIES

Club Secretary
Main duties include – arrange and minute Committee meetings; arrange and minute AGM; arrange prizes and engraving for annual awards; secure club places for the London Marathon; renew annual subscriptions to affiliated organisations; process England Athletics membership for all club members; main point of contact for enquiries to the club; circulate relevant information to club members.
Contact Amanda Hull for further information (secretary@romseyroadrunners.co.uk).
Membership Secretary
Main duties include – process membership renewals (including payment) for all members at the beginning of each year; collect membership forms and fees from new members throughout the year; maintain database of members; distribute membership cards to all members.
Contact David Nixon for further information (membership@romseyroadrunners.co.uk).
Team Captain
This was previously incorporated into the Fixtures Secretary role, however the Committee has recently decided to split this role so greater emphasis can be given to team events. Main duties for the Team Captain will include – promote CC6 and RR10 leagues, collect results and take club flag and kit tent to fixtures; recruit runners and timekeepers for Mile of Miles Relay teams and Test Way Relay teams; promote Hampshire Road Race League to members.
Contact Hannah Hunt for further information ([email protected].uk).

Beer Race Director
Main duties include – chair the Beer Race committee, looking after the organisation of our annual 5 mile road race event. The race director is the point of contact for the UKA, obtains the race licence, and the course measurement certificates. In addition there is sponsorship, local authority contacts, car parking arrangements, and start/finish area permissions. They have overall responsibility on race day to ensure smooth running of the event from initiating the start to the final prize giving. All of this is supported by the dedicated members of the race committee with their defined roles.
The position is really rewarding and is a great opportunity to become involved in race organisation. Most of the procedures are already in place, and fully documented with a timed sequence of events established. So it’s merely a case of working through the target dates. Romsey Road Runners have hosted this event for many years with various club members taking on the role of Race Director from time to time, all with their individual skills and ability to ensure a successful race day.
Contact Hannah Hunt for further information (fixtures@romseyroadrunners.co.uk).

Newsletter Editor
Collate articles from committee and club members to make up the four editions of the club newsletter each year. Arrange printing and distribution to club members.
Contact Dave Evenden for further information (newsletter@romseyroadrunners.co.uk).

Social Secretary
Organise all those social events that have become an important part of the club calendar, including the Pasta Party, the BBQ after the Beer Race, the club trip and the Awards Evening. If there are a few people who want to team up and take on this role, this approach has been successful in the past.

Solent Half Marathon 2014
Solent Half Marathon 2014

Sunday, 28th September marked the annual Solent Half Marathon, organised by Hardley Runners. Billed as a friendly local race, runners are treated to a circular quiet on-road route, which takes in Exbury and the Solent shoreline at Lepe, before turning inland towards Fawley. Finishing for Romsey was the following trio:

  • Paul Burnage 1:40:27
  • Jade Rolfe 1:44:46
  • Daniel Lurcock 1:47:50

The Clarendon Marathon, Half Marathon and Team Marathon took place on Sunday, 5th October with runners starting in Salisbury (for the full marathon) or Broughton (for the half marathon) and finishing in Winchester. The route followed the Clarendon long distance footpath between the two cities, challenging runners to a tough, undulating course, with plenty of breath taking distant views on their way down. The weather was perfect, dry and bright, with cooler temperatures than of late.

  • Neil Jennings 1:37:35
  • Jo Weguelin 1:56.27
  • Penny Jennings  1:58:21
  • Becky Tovey 2:06:16

and full marathon:

  • Wendy George 4:31:54
  • Di Cross 4:56:30

RRR, Tam Ryan also completed a half marathon on Sunday, 5th October: the Basingstoke Half Marathon. This race incorporated a number of challenging hills in Cliddesden and Farleigh Wallop and boasted some beautiful countryside and quaint villages south of Basingstoke. Tam described it as ‘a very hilly half but lovely and scenic with an enjoyable last 3-4 miles which was mainly flat or down hill all the way to the finish. It was well organised and very friendly, with plenty of support from the locals in the villages’. Tam finished in a time of 1:34:41, placing her 17th lady.

London Marathon Ballot

If you applied to the ballot for the 2015 London Marathon you should now have found out whether or not you got a place. If you were unsuccessful with your ballot entry and want to be considered for one of the club places, drop the club secretary and email ([email protected]) and hand in your rejection slip to one of the Committee members. Please note in the email and mark on the slip whether you have run the London Marathon before.

The draw to allocate these places will take place at the AGM on 5th November.

Club AGM

The Romsey Road Runners AGM is being held on Wednesday 5th November, 7.30pm at Crossfield Hall.
It would be great to see as many members there as possible. As well as FREE PIZZA you get to have your say about club issues and vote in new members of the Committee. The draw for the Club’s London Marathon places will also take place.

If you have any particular issues you would like to see on the agenda please email secretary@romseyroadrunners.co.uk by 13th October.
We hope to see you there!
RRR Committee

Hampshire Cross Country League

Please be aware, Romsey Road Runners is not affiliated to the Hampshire Cross Country League for the 2014/15 season and members will not be able to compete in these races.

This is due to poor attendance in previous years (only one member took part last year an we have to pay a club entry fee each season) and also due to the fact that only two of the five races in the league are held in Hampshire. This decision will be reviewed again ahead of the 2015/16 season so if anyone has any strong feelings about this please let the committee know.

Club Pentathlon

The club holds its own pentathlon competition each year, with your best five race results over six distances (5km, 5mile, 10km, 10mile, half marathon and marathon) counting towards the final results. There are three competition categories, men’s, ladies and over 50’s, and awards will be presented to the winners at the annual awards evening.

The 2013/14 pentathlon season began on 1st October 2013 and ends tomorrow (30th September). If you haven’t already please send your best race results for the six competitive distances to [email protected] by 13th October. You don’t need to have completed all six distances, even if you have only completed three or four please send them in.

For more information including the current standings please see http://www.romseyroadrunners.co.uk/race-diary/club-pentathlon-championship/

Club Handicap Challenge

Monday 8 September saw the club’s annual 5km handicap challenge play out round the streets of Braishfield.

Throughout the summer, members of the club ran in one or more of three separate 5km time trials to set the best time they can.  Using these results the club’s session leaders  set a handicap time for each individual that they are then challenged to try and beat.  The runner who beats their handicap by the greatest margin lifts the coveted trophy.

This year saw 33 members toe the start line with only 11 managing to beat the handicap.  Well done to everybody who took part, but the all important results are…

Jo Weguelin came in 3rd with a time gap of 27 seconds, narrowly pipped to 2nd by Tony Peelo with a time gap of 28 seconds.  But our winner on the night, and this years club champion, was Haly Nomm in a time of 00:24:30 and most importantly 39 seconds below her handicap time.

Results Round Up – 26/08/14

Pewsey success for RRR’s: Two Romsey Road Runners competed in the Pewsey Vale Half Marathon on 24 August, which took place on country roads just south of Marlborough. The undulating, circular route passed through scenic countryside, taking in one of the famous white horses, before finishing back at the village’s primary school. Brenda Topliss, who finished 96th overall in a time of 1:56:02, won the FV65 category and received a trophy when awards were presented after the race; Di Cross finished just ahead in 1:55:33 (91st, 20th woman); both runners used the event as part of their training for the Clarendon trail races in early October. The race was well organised, expertly marshalled and very friendly.

Corfe Castle 2014
Corfe Castle 2014

A further contingent of Romsey Road Runners travelled westwards to Corfe Castle in Dorset to run part of the notorious ‘Beast’ route just for fun! This annual club trip to Corfe is affectionately referred to as the Beast ‘recce’. The Romsey runners run about 9 miles of the race route, which can be confirmed as being accurately described as undulating and extremely hilly! Part of the course includes the formidable Houns-tout cliff where the runners climb around 200 steps to the top and experience breathtaking views across the Purbeck coastline; before finally returning along the cliff top and back to Corfe Common.

RRR at the Romsey Sports Fair

Romsey Sports Fair 2014
Romsey Sports Fair 2014

RRR were at the Romsey Sports Fair today. The “Can you beat a Romsey Road Runner?” competition was very popular with the kids.

Participants were asked to do 50m shuttles over a minute to see how far they could run. Well done to Marcus (surname not known) who managed 320m!

Many thanks to all that volunteered at the stall today.

Romsey Sports Fair – Call for volunteers

It’s Romsey Sports Fair on 27th July and RRR will be there!

During Thursday’s track session we will be measuring how far people can run in one minute. This is so that we can run a “beat a Romsey Road Runner” competition during the Sports Fair where people will be invited to run as far as they can up and down a 100m track for one minute and then compare their distance against existing members. The main point is to show that RRR is for all runners and there is a place in the club for everyone who likes to run. All participants will enter a free prize draw.

Amanda Hull is looking for people who can help out at the Romsey Sports Centre from either 11:00-13:00 or 13:00-17:00. If you can help please email Amanda at [email protected] before 20th July.

Results Round Up – 29/4/14

The first RR10 of the 2014 season started at Royal Victoria Country in Netley last Wednesday. There was a high turn out from Romsey Runners, who were presented with new route around the park, which provided plenty of mud. Romsey finishers were:

Men: 5th Matt Hammerton, 20th Toby Burrows, 21st Jimmy Hunt, 26th Mark Stileman, 29th Andrew Proctor, 40th Ian Ralph, 41st Duncan Dickenson, 48th Christopher Brown, 74th Tony King, 84th Nick Berryman, 103rd Duncan Walling, 165th John Quayle, 187th Stuart Cripps, 189th Andrew Archibald, 254th Derek Kelly, and in 259th Greg Roulston.

The Romsey Men fielded three teams finishing 4th, 12th and 27th. All the A team finished in Top 30 while the B Team all finished in the Top 90. The Romsey Women managed to field four teams finishing 12th, 18th, 30th & 49th respectively.

Houghton 11k Runners
Houghton 11k Runners

A very wet Sunday saw the annual Houghton Trail Event; a selection of runs and cycle events starting from the village hall with all proceeds raised going towards the Houghton All Saints Church. There was a choice of 4k fun run, a 11k trail run, a 5k off road cycle and 14 or 32k mountain bike ride. The route was essentially off road using parts of the Test and Clarendon Way, trails and paths and some quiet rural roads.

RRR, Di Cross said afterwards, “The Houghton 11k trail run was great fun as ever, despite the deluge.”

A friendly event, introduced by Dickie Davies, it was well run with plenty of marshalls and delicious cake at the end. The course was muddy and slippery – probably worse for the cyclists than runners – with some good hills along the way.

Di finished in 1:01:38 – a minute off her PB for the course and but still finished first in her age category. Other finishers: Tony Burrows 44:45 (3rd man), Jimmy Hunt 45:07(5th man), Hannah Hunt 56:43 (3rd lady), Stuart Cripps 58:34, Tony Peelo 1:00:03, Di Cross 1:01:38, Penny Jennings 1:02:11, Alice Lane 1:03:14, Sarah White 1:05:37, Liz Slade 1:07:45, Anna Duignan 1:13:29, Naomi Farrington 1:14:59 and David Nixon 1:16:13.

The 32k cycle event saw RRR Wendy Couper, first in her age category finishing in 2:55:33.

Dorset Walk, 17th May 2014, 10.15am

This is a new walk, but one with a number of familiar features

Starting at the quarry car park above Kimmeridge (GR 918800) we will descend towards Kimmeridge Bay where we will turn west on the coast path into the Lulworth Ranges, past the Nodding Donkey (oil well) and out towards Broad Bench.

We ascend a hill (easy at first, gets steep!) to a bench where we will have our coffee break. We go along Gad Cliff and descend to Worbarrow Bay. Before us is the steep ascent to Rings Hill Iron Age hillfort on Flower Barrow where we will have our lunch break.

After our stop we turn east and take a familiar path along then down to Tyneham where, if time and/or inclination allows, we may make a short stop. We ascend to Gad Cliff where our path remains high as we walk along the ridge back to the quarry car park.

Distance: 9 miles. 3 good hills.
Bring refreshments for the lunch break.

Most of you know the quarry car park above Kimmeridge. If you are unsure, contact me for more details – e-mail: [email protected].

Pasta Party!

RRR London Marathon Runners 2014
RRR London Marathon Runners 2014

Romsey Road Runners gathered en masse to eat pasta and to wish this years participants in the London Marathon the very best of luck.

Over 50 club members gathered at the Sun Inn for copious amounts of pasta on Tuesday evening to assist fellow runners in  ‘carb’ loading in preparation for Sundays London Marathon.

Six RRR will be taking part; some seasoned vets, others for the first time; all looked in great shape and were well prepared. We wish them well and hope they have a good run on the day.

David Nixon once again provided the cleverly thought out questions to the Pasta Party Quiz which was won by the (brilliant) Fuzzy Duck team.

About Romsey Road Runners

Who are we?  Romsey Road Runners is an amateur running club, open to all runners who are aged 15 years and over. We offer a programme of training, racing and social events, and there is no pressure to do any more than you feel capable of doing. There is, however, lots of encouragement from like-minded people who understand the joys and pains of running.

What do we do?  Training nights are on a Monday and Thursday, involving a mixture of sessions including intervals, hill efforts and tempo runs, totalling approximately 6 miles.  On training nights the club is split into 4 different groups based on running pace, so you will never be asked to run too far above or below you own ability. Our team of session leaders provide a structured training schedule to improve your speed, stamina and strength, and are on hand on club nights to help out those new to running or those looking for some advice & guidance.

Want to find out more?  We welcome new members to join us for a few evenings to see if the club is right for you. Take a look at our membership information and find out about more about the races we get involved with and our social events.

To see our club constitution, please click here.

CC6 Cancelled

Members please note that tomorrow’s CC6 has been cancelled due to the weather.

The following is lifted from TRC’s Facebook page.

During the week we have been monitoring the course and the ground has become ever more saturated. This alone would not normally prompt us to cancel a race but the strong storm coming in this afternoon and continuing tomorrow morning has rendered the course extremely dangerous due to fallen debris and trees.

A message from our new Chairman

Hello to all fellow Romsey Road Runners! It is a pleasure and a privilege to become Chair of such a fantastic club. I’ve been a member for nearly five years since moving to Romsey and it was a great way to learn about all the back streets and surrounds of Romsey. And still is as our new Abbotswood run proved the other week! Romsey Road Runners is my first running club, although I ran for a number of years before moving here, and like many others I was a little daunted about the prospect of joining a running club. I needn’t have worried. All the people were really friendly from that first Thursday evening right through to today. It’s one of the things that makes this club special – that runners camaraderie we have no matter what your running motivation or ability.

I need to say thank you to Paul Bradley who has been a fantastic Chair for the club for the past six years. I hope I can live up to this tough act to follow. I look forward to working with you all and the committee to keep this club as the vibrant, exciting, friendly and ambitious club that it is.

Tony King
