Committed Romsey Road Runners Anna Duignan, Gill Callus and Wendy Couper travelled to the wilds of north Devon to compete in the Exmoor Endurance Life 10k. The run was hilly, as you might expect along the rugged coast, with runners climbing 1,300 feet in windy conditions. All three were glad to finish and were pleased with their efforts. Anna was rewarded with coming first in her age category – in a time of 1:43:45. Wendy and Gill finished together in 1:55:31.

RR_15042013In Brighton, Tam Ryan and Sarah Thorn both put in stonking performances in the 4th Brighton Marathon. Tam, who has been running well all season, completed the 26.2 miles in an impressive time of 3.28.28, averaging 7.57 mile splits for the distance, whilst Sarah, who was running her first ever marathon, put in an excellent performance of 3.46.27, proving her strong return to running.

This is becoming a popular marathon with runners, with a record number of participants taking part. The weather stayed dry, and even the sun made an appearance at lunchtime. Many spectators turned out to cheer on the runners, especially along Madeira Drive towards the finish line.

We wish all those Romsey Road Runners who will be taking part in this weekends’ Virgin London Marathon, all the very best.

RR_08042013Sunday 31st March saw the Hinton Admiral 10K take place. This is a new run for 2013 held on the Hinton Admiral Estate, near Bransgore, Dorset. The run was an opportunity to raise funds on behalf of the Wessex Autistic Society and a unique opportunity to run through the wooded Estate and see the ancestral home of the Tapps-Gervis-Meyrick family. The house and grounds are open to the public on selected days of the year.

A total of 161, mainly local runners took part, including a Romsey threesome – all ladies. First back was Anna Duignan in 65:45, followed by Gill Callus 71:50 and Wendy Couper 76:47. They reported that it was “an excellent cross country course made all the more enjoyable with the glorious sunshine”; something that has been distinctly lacking recently. The photo illustrates what a bit of sunshine can do, or maybe it was the excitement of seeing the Easter Bunny, either way, smiles all round!

RR_18032013_1Gill Callus and Wendy Couper recently took part in the Great Western 10K in Sherborne, Dorset. Gill and Wendy described it as “one of the most scenic runs we have ever done but it was a bitterly cold morning with lots and lots of mud and one or two hills – the perfect way to spend Mothering Sunday!” Gill finished second in her category in a time of 84 minutes 48, whilst Wendy was first in her category with a time of 85 minutes 12.

On the same day, a group of RRRs completed the ‘Mad March’ – a single 10 mile lap or double lap 20 mile event organised by Zoom Tri Club on the outskirts of Christchurch. The event takes place on the rural country lanes around the Burton area and is popular with those training for a spring marathon. According to those taking part it was “very cold and extremely windy, and the lanes were rather wet & muddy in places”. The conditions, however, didn’t deter the runners; in fact a number managed personal bests for the distance. Continue reading
